10 Powerful Tony Soprano Quotes That Embody Our Modern Day Angst

Whether or not you’ve ever seen The Sopranos, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Tony Soprano. Ushering in a new era of television and the modern antihero prototype, his character puts into words  what many of us feel but can’t (or won’t) fully articulate. With that, here are 10 powerful Tony Soprano quotes that I feel represent modern day angst.

1. It's good to be in something from the ground floor...

tony soprano is picking up the paper on his driveway and opening it to read it.
S1, E1, "Pilot"
“It's good to be in something from the ground floor. And I came too late for that, I know. But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over.”

2. Tony's Got The World By The You-Know-What...

tony is venting to dr. melfi about feeling like a loser.
S2, E6, "The Happy Wanderer"

I don’t know who I’m angry at. I’m just angry, okay? Why the f*ck am I here? I even asked to come back. I got the world by the balls and can’t stop feeling like a f*cking loser.”

3. Tony Wishes it was Something "Physical"

tony soprano is sitting in a doctor's office asking the doctor what's wrong with him.
S2, E11, "House Arrest"

Nothing physical, right? For Christ’s sake, I just passed out. If it’s nothing physical, then what the f*ck is wrong with me? I’ll be relieved when somebody puts their finger on whatever the f*ck it is that’s wrong with me. I wish it was physical, so I could have it ripped the f*ck out.”

Along with that, here’s another from the same episode: “You go to Italy, you lift some weights, you watch a movie. It’s all a series of distractions ’til you die.”

Tony Soprano is telling Dr. Melfi he still has to be the sad clown.
S4, E10, "The Strong, Silent Type"

It just makes me wonder what kind of f**king toilet world we live in. A friend of the family, little boy, gets shot with an arrow, cuts off the flow of blood to his brain. Thirteen years old. He’s going to live, but he’s never gonna be right.

My nephew. I love that kid like I love my son. But I think he’s got a drug problem, heroin. It kills me just to say it, because I got so many hopes tied up in this kid. This 9/11 shit, I don’t know. The shit that’s going on everywhere. It’s like some f**king asshole is stalking the human race . . . My wife prays to God. What kind of God does this shit?

5. "I Ought to Quit This F*cking Therapy!"

tony soprano is in his dream staring into an old house.
S4, E11, "Calling All Cars"

I ought to quit this f*cking therapy. Maybe it’s this, maybe it’s that. Maybe it’s va fangool! What about impulse control? I’ve been sitting here for 4 years and nothing’s been done about that! And it leads me to make mistakes at work! What good did you do me with that?!”

6. Thank You for Holding! Your Call is Important to us!

Tony Soprano talking to Dr, Melfi in Cold Cuts
S5, E10, "Cold Cuts"
“Thank you for holding. Your call is important to us. If it's so important to you, answer the f**king phone . . . It's a level of bullsh*t, bullsh*t, bullsh*t! Each idea they come up with that's supposed to make things better, makes things worse.”

7. We're Sitting DUCKS Here!

tony is talking to sil at bada bing about terrorism and security..
S5, E10, "Cold Cuts"

Hear about that sh*t with the ports? I know customs agents are bad for us, but anti-terrorism-wise, they do nothing. What’s it gonna take? A f*cking nuclear bomb? We’re f*cking sitting ducks here. The only thing between our homes and Port Newark is a chainlink fence.”

8. After All is Said & Done...

tony is sitting in dr. melfi's office.
S6, E17, "Walk Like a Man"

So after all is said and done, after all the complainin’ and the cryin’ and all the f*ckin’ bullshit… is this all there is?”

9. "Obviously, I'm Prone to Depression."

Tony Soprano is talking to Dr. Melfi and comparing mothers to school buses. The text of the quote is on the image.
S6, E17, "Walk Like a Man"

Obviously, I’m prone to depression…a certain bleak attitude, about the world…but I know I can handle it. Your kids though…It’s like when they’re little, and they get sick…you’d give anything in the world to trade places with them…so they don’t have to suffer. And then to think you’re the cause of it.

10. But in spite of everything, "This...is not all there is."

tony is talking to dr. melfi about his experience taking peyote.

When I was in Las Vegas, I took peyote. Curiosity, I don’t know . . . Well, I saw some things. Not…things, per se, hallucinations…it’s kind of hard to describe. All I can say is I saw, for pretty certain…that this…everything we see and experience…is not all there is . . . But that’s as far as I’m gonna go with it.”

Conclusion & Key Takeaway

To conclude, I’m always amazed by the fact that certain quotes or lines on The Sopranos only seem to become more relevant with age. This list contains just 10 out of many, so for that, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s connect online!
